Background: Her great-grandfather took it from Calcutta to South Africa. The speaker inherited it from her grandmother.





Physical description: brightly coloured, red, white, green and gold with patterns like leaves, frayed.
Fray: if cloth frays or something frays it, the threads in it start to come apart. E.g. The cuffs of his shirt were fraying.





Value: it’s important because of the story of the greatgrandfather taking it from Calcutta to South Africa. Also because she inherited it and will pass it on to her children.



Memories: Childhood memory of it hanging on her grandmother’s wall.

Vocabulary

Bankrupt: /ˈbæŋkrʌpt/ without enough money to pay what you owe. Insolvent. E.g. They went bankrupt in 2009. The company was declared bankrupt in the High Court.

Legend: E.g. Legend has it that the lake was formed by the tears of a god.

Bequeath to say in a will that you want somebody to have your property, money, etc. after you die. E.g. He bequeathed his entire estate (= all his money and property) to his daughter.  
 
Fray: if cloth frays or something frays it, the threads in it start to come apart. E.g. The cuffs of his shirt were fraying.

fall apart: to be in very bad condition so that parts are breaking off. E.g. My car is falling apart.

handed down (passed on from generation to generation. E.g. These skills used to be handed down from father to son. Most of his clothes were handed down to him by his older brother.)  

an heirloom /ˈeəluːm/ (valuable object that has been owned by a family for many years. E.g. a family heirloom. The violin was a family heirloom).
